Due to a cold northwesterly flow, snow is falling in the Great Smoky Mountains today. This phenomenon called topographic forcing is responsible for the great amount of snow these mountains get each winter season. It is hard to believe that only a few hundred miles from my house snow is falling and it is sixty degrees here with brilliant blue and sunny skies. In the Smokies, elevations above 2,500 feet (like Gatlinburg) may see 1" to 4" of snow. The highest spots over 4,000 feet may approach 6", while a mix of rain and snow with little accumulation is anticipated down in the valleys.
