Humane Origins

With great trepidation, I drove the long drive to the humane society. I parked and walked inside to be greeted by a young lady,

"Can I help you?" She asked with a grin.

"I am looking to volunteer," I said, shyly averting eye contact.

"Honey, where have you been?" She said, smiling warmly and welcoming me inside. "When can you start?"

"When do you need me?" I asked.

"How 'bout we see you here at eight in the morning?" She asked. "Eight okay?"

"Sounds great to me," I said, walking out with a renewed vigor in my steps.

I heard the lady and the man who worked there talk excitedly amongst themselves about having a volunteer.

I am so excited! I haven't been this excited in years! I felt almost like I got a job! I am going to bust my butt tomorrow to give them a helping hand. Thank you to the commenter who suggested this! It is going to be so nice to have a reason to get up in the morning and to have some purpose to my days.

WTG! It does sound perfect for you and I know it can be so much easier to relate to animals than to humans sometimes (especially at 8 in the morning;-)

Have fun with it and I hope it leads to more opportunities and fulfillment.

Great idea, Andrew! And good followthrough. I am very eager to hear about your experiences at the Humane Society. It's true, animals are sometimes easier to deal with than people.

Careful about bringing home extra dogs though. I have a friend who did this and that's how they ended up with 4 dogs!

Amazing how quickly things can turn around, huh? It's like the shelter was just waiting for someone like you to walk in. I can see your smile right now, big and bold. I wish you well, of course, and can't wait to hear how tomorrow goes.

Great news, Andrew! I know you'll be wonderful and a great assest to their volunteer team... you have so much inside of you to give.

Waking up in the morning and having a clear, positive and productive purpose to your day is the key to a long and happy life as far as I'm concerned.

Good luck :-))

Andrew,
That is awesome. I am proud that you took the step to go in and inquire about it. That alone took a lot. I hope that the feeling you have when you leave there tomorrow will only reinforce what a wonderful thing you are doing for the employees, the animals and yourself.

Awesome idea, Andrew! Being a volunteer can be very rewarding plus as you think about persuing getting a job this will look great on your resume. Employers take volunteer work as seriously as regular jobs too.

I know you will be great working with the animals. Just make sure you don't end up bringing them all home with you. LOL

Way to go Andrew! I have fostered animals and volunteered with a rescue for several years now and it is very rewarding. Just keep in mind that it can be heartbreaking as well, so be ready for that end of it. When one situation gets you down, look at the big picture. The hardest thing to learn and accept is that "you can't save them all". But the attention and tenderness you're going to give those animals will mean more than we can ever really know.

You're doing great!
