Very interesting. So the diesel powers the alternator which supplies the electricity? How many miles to the gallon?

Summer, I know this sounds like propaganda, but trains can move a ton of freight over 470 miles on a single gallon of fuel. They are much more efficient than moving freight by trucks on the interstates.

Not propaganda. The truth! We have two very well traveled main routes in Virginia I81 and I95. The truck traffic is horrendous on both of them. I've always said it would be far more efficient to use trains to move whatever it is they are hauling. Thank you for answering my questions. Like you I've always been interested in trains. A funny story.... my sister and I used to travel by train from Alexandria, VA to Reidsville, NC to see my grandparents. We used to take Southern Railway and this was back in the 60s. One Saturday we decided to go back to the train station and take my son who is in his 20s to see some trains. Of course all the passenger trains are Amtrak and the engines don't look like they did back in the 60s. So my sister went up to the ticket window and asked the guy there, "Do you have any REAL trains that come through here?" I walked over to the ticket window and the guy was just staring at her and only said "What?" I had to explain to him that she wanted to see engines that were snub nosed sort of rounded instead of the sleek looking Amtrak engines. I'm sure he's never forgotten her as she was dead serious. Merry Christmas~
