I will often be sitting in the den smoking a cigarette, and watching the weather channel. Maggie will come ambling through (checking on me, no doubt). She will just randomly stop and sniff some random point on the floor. I don't understand this little vignette of a dog's life. She will take great satisfaction out of it, too. The floor will look clean.

What freaks me out is when they sniff the floor and then start following a "trail". Two Christmases ago, Violet, our daughter's dog, sat staring fixedly at a point above the fireplace mantle. We joked that she was waiting for Santa Claus, but when my husband shined a flashlight up the chimney, he saw two bright eyes staring back at him. A raccoon!
Better that she's smiffing some invisible spot on the floor than being stubborn about a squirrel pancake! Imagine waking up to that in the middle of the night.
Grannie!!
