Old man winter has arrived and I grow ever more excited with every passing day. Josie saw snow yesterday in New Mexico. Crusty saw some snow as well in Chicago. I worried about Annabel driving in the snow on her way back from Albuquerque today.
It rarely snows this far below the Mason-Dixon line. I think our last measurable snow was in 2001. I was married and still had my Geo Tracker 4X4 truck. Me and my then wife spent all day driving around in four wheel drive looking at the sights of a winter wonderland. That seems like several lives removed from now.
I know it is getting closer to Christmas and for the chance of snow when I start visiting weather blogs and meteorological websites. I carefully study the weather models and the forecasts in anticipation of even the slightest chance of frozen precipitation. When I was a child, I would stay up all night watching the weather channel for the hopes of staying home from school. Does it snow often where you live?

We get quite a bit of snow here in Minnesota. But, have only had flurries here so far this year. It does get really cold though. Last year the coldest I think was -22 F. THAT was cold :)
I hope you have a good weekend:)
It snows some in Kansas. I am hoping it won't while we are in Kansas City this weekend. Oh well if it does.
I am glad you got a hot meal. I am sorry your father did not give you an option of turning down the invitation.
Now that Thanksgiving has passed, Christmas is coming! Hooray! My second favorite holiday! Can't wait.
I am 45 and have lived in Florida all my life. I have never ever seen snow. It will be in the 80's today as the cool front we were expecting has stalled and won't be coming.
The beach weather that Cheryl and I were experiencing yesterday ... done come and gone. The back of my house faces the Blue Ridge Mountains, I can actually see them and see the weather coming. When the cold front was approaching, the skies became a very dark blue and the wind kicked up something fierce. But...while I was cooking yesterday, I actually had to turn the a/c on. Crazy.
We do get snow here and we've sometimes had blizzards. Usually though, just a few inches at a time every once in a while.
:(
I only know eternal summers days
I never saw snow before.
Nice pic as usual!
Yes, it was so warm here yesterday that we turned off the heat, opened every window and changed back into lighter clothes.
But it is New England and the weather changes on a dime. We have had snow on some Thanksgivings in the past.
What I love about working in education is that I still get the snow days! I think the staff is just as bad as the kids praying for those big snow storms so we can roll over and go back to sleep.
Peace,
Lena
Yep, I got snow too yesterday. I'm north of Kansas City though. I absolutely love love loved it!
Plenty of snow blankets Illinois in winter, believe me! Even though there hasn't been anything substantial here yet, there was some pretty lake-effect snow along the shore when we were driving yesterday--those chubby flakes that lazily drift down from the sky before plopping onto the ground and melting in three seconds! It was beautiful.
A thick blanket of snow still lays atop my car this morning, they sky is grey and heavy and the forecast is for more. A nice day to stay in with a book and some cocoa! I too remember waiting eagerly for those school closings as a child, and since I lived in South Dakota, they very often happened!
We have a fair bit of snow but then we live in northern Ontario so we expect it.
I have a hard time keeping up with feeding the outdoor birds, they eat so much in this weather just to stay alive!
It used to snow a lot here, but these past couple of years we've been lucky to get frost... How much does that suck?
Had our first snow of the season at the weekend here in the UK!
Only lasted overnight though.
It almost never snows where I live. The last snow was in 2004 (we had about 2 whole inches!)and it was a fluke! The snow before that was in the late 70's... it melted before it ever hit the ground. I wish it would snow just a little bit every winter.....our ground is usually too warm for it to stick.
I forgot to mention where I am.... the south/central part of the gulf coast of Texas.
It snowed on the way from my parent's to our home in South Western PA. We went to shop at 4AM and the snow was heavy and very wet. Now, it lays on the grass, and will be gone in a couple of hours.
Remind me NEVER to go out to Walmart on Black Friday, ever again. MADNESS!!
Enjoy your day

yeah, actually the winter has arrived to Sundsvall, Sweden. We don´t have a lot of snow but when you wake up in the morning and look out the window you can see a white blanket of snow on the ground and it´s freezing outside. I look forward to a long and cold winter this year too. / Emil
It snows alot here in Portola. Sort of, it only heavy snows about 4 times a year but those are major dumpings. I have to say that your family leaving you alone for a major holiday is F*cked!! But I'm glad you got a good hot meal. Too bad you can't email an actual person. I cook big on holidays and it's just Fred and me. You could have emailed yourself to me and we could have shook you out at this end and you could have eaten with us.

We already had snow on the ground twice this year in upstate NY. No snow tonight but an overnight low of 14. The sky is clear and the moon will be full tomorrow.
I like the photos of Molly that you posted. She reminds me of my friend's dog Lucky. Lucky is 1/2 schnauzer and pays very careful attention to her guy owner. Now that I have heard about Maggie and seen her picture I think that she is part schnauzer too. So I think that when I get a puppy I want it to be part schnauzer so that it will pay close attention to me. Take care,
Charlotte
Nice comments and thoughts of snow. Summer was right about our weather. A cold and windy front arrivd in the wee hours of the morning and changed everything. I think it's only going to be in the 20's tonight, with daytime temps in the 40's. We get snow about 4 or 5 times a winter, and have had some bad blizzards. I'm not ready for snow yet.
Here in the valley it only snows occasionally. We MAYBE get a snowfall once a winter. Last winter was an exception, we got two or three. None of them amount to anything, but the kdis love them. Usually what shuts us down here is the ice.
When I lived in Alabama it snowed and they shut EVERYTHING down and it was only about an inch of snow. I found it funny.
In Eastern Oregon where I grew up we would get FEET of snow every year. Never did they cancel school.
Not sure why I keep CAPATILIZING words....lolol....I'm in a weird mood today I guess.
Oh yes - snow we have plenty of (Adirondack Mountains). And cold. Take a look at my blog for video clips of my walk through the snowy woods today. Temp was 15 when I got up and never quite made it to 20 today. Snowed continuously all day but not very heavy. Coldest here is usually around 40 to 45 below (F). Snow, I believe is something like 180 inches annual average. I LOVE it!

Hi Andrew!
I love the snow shadows in the woods -- but I especially love the Christmas lights on Snoopy's doghouse, can you make them blink? LoL That would be awesome, eh?
Gives you something to think about now, right? Just thought it might look super cute.
Hope all is well with you :)

Just say NO to Snow!! LOL Can't stand the cold but its fun to play in.
I am from Nebraska, and it snows alot here. We had our first blanket on Wed. Most of it finally melted today.
Happy Thanksgiving!
I motored to my family home in Maine for Thanksgiving to find chillier temperatures and a crisp, carpet of snow. Dogs were holding their front paws up alternately and shaking them to ward off the cold. Pink cheeked children were waddling in oversized snowsuits, and mittens. Snow is a frequent winter visitor here in the Northeast. Once, it snowed one hundred and twenty inches in three days, and deposited approximately ten feet of the stuff. Yup, we get lots of snow.
That looks sooo beautiful!
I love the look of snow, just not the cold that has to go with it.
I moved to Arkansas from Chicgao.
We had blizzards up there. But , down here , it snows a "dusting" which i would call frost...lol... and they close school,no one knows how to drive, no body goes to work.
Funny. I wish it could be tropical weather ....and snow on the ground and the trees.
Enjoy it if you've got it. :))
It is PRETTY!
The climate has changed so drastically from when I was a child, late 1950s to late 1960s. I remember we used to get a LOT of snow (lived in Baltimore and on Long Island too)...so much so that you couldn't drive a car down the street. My parents would pull my brother and me on a sled to the grocery store. We'd go right down the middle of the street. The last 10 years have been really wacky though. I think the last really good snow I can remember would be maybe 10 years ago. Since then we've had little or no snow, very mild weather in the winter months and truthfully, I haven't unpacked my heavy winter sweaters from my hope chest in 3 years. I thought we'd have a cold winter this year but now I'm hearing no, it's going to be mild. Bah. I live in NJ BTW.
Very rarely here in North Alabama. Where my husband is originally from (Chile) they have snow topped mountains in the winter. I like seeing it but since it is South America, the season reversal, if we go in the winter, I get sick going from summer to winter cold. That's the bad thing about being paralyzed, you just don't handle the weather changes so gracefully.

doesn't snow much in houston :o)
You have snow in Alabama? I envy you. Here in Maryland we've had very wimpy winters for the past 5 years. Way too warm, not enough snow. It scares me. I grew up near Lake Erie where we had lots of "lake-effect" snow. I miss winter.
In Barcelona it only snows a litle some years. But we have the mountains about 300 km and is plenty of snow there most of the winter.
In South Africa, of course people would think it never snows there...but high up in the mountains, it does! Every year, you get snow even during October..which is Spring in South Africa! Sometimes it snows even in cities like Pretoria, Johannesburg, places where it never used to snow...last year was one of those....and the snow was really thick at places. Living in London, i was sent pictures from friends/family about the snow...in London, it snowed in 2004 January...and again last year too...I don't believe it will snow again in 2008, but ...the weather might change...:)
snow...YUM! I too used to sit up and tire myself out waiting for the snow, or rather, willing it to continue to snow to prevent the teachers from driving ing...and hoping that the schools would be closed hoping to hear the name of the elementary school I attended named off as one of the "lucky ones" early mornings on my parents old only am-fm radio-before CD's were around. :)
I remember blizzards though..and I do remember the one in 79..oUCH! my parents had to drive to the hospital to deliver my brother..the third child at the time...good gosh..it was terrible!
I still have pictures from my old photo album my mom made for us when we were much younger.
Always,
Crusty~
If I could mail you snow, I would!! :)
