Are We There Yet?

I got a big surprise this morning when my father's Honda pulled up in front of the house instead of Charlie's Caprica. What was happening to Sunday morning biscuits? I walked out to the car as dad rolled down his darkly tinted window.

"Come on," dad said. "We're going to Jack's in LaFayette for breakfast."

Charlie was riding shotgun and Horsefly was in the backseat.

"Let me go change out of my pajamas," I said to my father and hurried inside.

"Hurry up or we are leaving without you. We are all hungry," my father replied.

All I had on was a t-shirt and some sweatpants. I changed into a nice button up shirt, blue jeans, and my glaring white new Air Jordans.

"That looks much better," my father, Hyacinth, said.

I poked Horsefly a few times on the drive and he would just burst out in laughter. It was like we always were when we were kids. It made Charlie smile.

It was a short drive to LaFayette -- the quaint little town that is our county's seat. We all got the big breakfast with a large coffee and Horsefly got a sausage biscuit and a Dr. Pepper. Charlie was nervous as hell about Horsefly's drink saying he hoped he didn't get sick and blow chunks in my father's car. He urged Horsefly to get a diet drink, but Horsefly put up a fuss.

Jack's has an awesome Southern-style breakfast. The grits were my favorite part of the meal. They were buttery and creamy. I made my biscuit go swimming in the sawmill gravy until it got gooey and soft. I ate it with a fork. My last act of the morning was to order a sausage biscuit to-go for the Magster. She would feel so left out if she didn't get her usual biscuit on Sunday morning.

Who's This Guy Named Jack?

The phone loudly rang and woke me from this trance I was experiencing sitting in front of this computer. Maggie and I just had a long and fitful nap and I think I left the better half of me in dreamland. I was also listening to Enya's first album which exacerbated my trance like state.

"I am fixing to head through La Fayette on my way home from work. Do you want a Jack's burger?" Charlie asked after I answered the phone with great trepidation.

"Sure, I would love one. I appreciate it," I excitedly and kindly replied to Charlie. "Could you get me some of their French fries as well?"

Charlie chuckled. They have some of the best french fries.

"I just called your daddy and he said he about can't wait to get off of work in thirty minutes. He should be there shortly," Charlie told me. "He says he has you a treat as well soon to be birthday boy. You will be 44 in just a few short hours."

"Charlie, we are all getting to be so old!" I said. "Don't remind me."

"Horsefly will be 45 next July!" Charlie told me as if he couldn't believe it. "As soon as I get home, I have to take him bowling. Janice has woke him and is giving him a bath now as we speak."

"What are you getting for your birthday?" Charlie then asked me.

"100 bucks of game controllers for all my retro gaming emulators," I told Charlie. "They were shipped from China a few weeks ago. I hope they made it here in time."

The Chuck Wagon is Just Mere Moments Away...

"Where are you?" I asked Charlie over the phone.

"I am driving through Lafayette right now," Charlie replied. "Don't eat supper as I am bringing you a Jack's hamburger combo meal."

Charlie brought me Jack's one other time and it was quite tasty. I loved the crisp crinkle cut fries.

Here comes the small talk for which for which I am terrible and for which I hate...

"How was work today?" I then asked Charlie.

"Same old shit," Charlie replied. "At least it was quiet in the office today."

"Are you okay?" Charlie then asked me. "You sound nervous."

"I just got up!" I told Charlie. "It is going on six in the afternoon and I am just stirring. Maggie said no more to this sleeping business."

Charlie laughed and then I nervously chuckled.

"Well," Charlie said. "Give me thirty minutes to get to your house and we will take your medications and you will get a good meal. I got you the biggest soda they sell."

"Where is dad?" I asked Charlie.

"He had some Christmas party at your brother's house to attend," Charlie then replied. "See you in a few minutes."
