Shaking the Family Tree

I just did something that is going to cause a shit storm in my family. I went around to every business I knew and applied for jobs. The most promising one was Domino's Pizza as a delivery driver and working at McDonald's. I am just tired of sitting at home doing nothing. I want that pride that comes from making your own money. I am tired of my father getting on to me when I spend more than fifty dollars at the grocery store or having to beg him for a carton of cigarillos. I want control of my own money and to hell with this disability malarkey. What good is it if I cannot even access it? Nothing. Hopefully, I will get some calls in the next few days. I am eager to start work -- so eager I am almost beside myself.

Andrew, this is great. If I were you I might think about doing some things to make sure your father doesn't claim your desire to work is due to lack of insight of your illness and try to have your meds increased, something like continuing to volunteer, and getting to know folks you volunteer for so they can give you job references.

Hey, don't take the above comment wrong. But if there is about to be a storm in the family, it seems like it would help if you have people outside of your family to vouch for your dependanc, stability, goodheartedness, etc.

I think it's great that you are applying for jobs. I know it sounds odd, but since you applied at Domino's, have you thought about a paper delivery route, if they have them anymore that is?

They do, and they are probably better then dealing with people at Dominos and ALOT better then Mickey D's. I hated working fast food. But if you are determined, go for it. Have the drive is better than not. Good luck Andrew and take care.

Sir:

While I applaud and agree with your notions and efforts, wouldn't it be a helluva lot easier to:

1. Get your designated payee changed from your father to a neutral party... and

2. Volunteering at the shelter/hospital as you see fit?

I think the paying job is a wonderful idea, but you will need to also keep the income low because the SSDI benefits and insurance are also necessary for you.

I truly think you need to try to change who is the payee so that you have access to what is rightfully yours.

Does your Disability take care of your expensive meds? Don't want to jeopardize that.
The volunteering will ease you back into a schedule and see if your social anxieties can stand it. I hope you got back to the shelter after sleeping in.
Fast food has a lot of grumpy people to deal with on both sides of the counter.

I understand (very well) your desire for control over your own life... I truly do. But, I worry you are going too fast and will "crash" under the pressure of what seems to have been an extremely intense week for you.

Just pump those breaks a little bit? Please? :-)

What happened to the Humane Society? Seems like that was a great place to get into the rhythm of working. There's a lot of ups and downs, things you have to shake off with working.

I don't give advice, but, if I did I would say exactly what Pipe said. Hint, hint.

Take it all in baby steps as it seems you're doing..Applauds and lots of A's for effort (Shit, do I sound like a teacher now?)

How about pet sitting on the side? Good ones are hard to come by and you are already an animal lover. I wish we had someone reliable here. With 2 dogs, a vacation is an impossibility.
