The Meeting with the Social Worker…

“You realize your returning to work will affect your check, don’t you?” the social worker asked me warily.  “I just want to make you aware of that and for you to be cognizant of it.”

“Yes,” I replied.

“What are you wanting to do?” she then asked me. “What are your goals for returning to work?”

“I want to be independent,” I replied back. “I just want to be self supporting. I want to go back to work and be a self supporting man.”

“Meet me at the hospital on the 17th and we will get things going.  Just ask for Tiffany at the front desk.”

“Thank you!” I replied excitedly.  “I appreciate your help!”

“Thank you sir. And have a nice day.”

WOW - sounds like positive things are happening at the speed of light! How can you keep up? This beats the heck of just sitting sill and watching the days roll by.

Keep at it, friend!

Sir:

I am not sure... but is this post in regard to your vocational training, or is it a job you have applied for? If it is vocational training, I am presuming it WILL NOT affect your SSI benefits. But if it is an actual job, you really should think about it carefully because of the costs of medications.

If you do risk losing SSI benefits with whatever this hospital position is... perhaps you may wish to try to take a middle-ground approach instead:

1. Because the loss of your medical coverage is too risky, perhaps you could find a volunteer position somewhere instead?

2. The volunteer position would give you the ability to work at something, and feel that sense of accomplishment... and most likely help others too boot!

3. The volunteer position could very possibly allow you to have a higher overall income (SSI benefits in total) than what you might make at a starting job. Therefore, perhaps distilling out the essential components of why you want to work would be helpful:

a. I *think* you want to work to feel the sense of accomplishment. The volunteer position would allow that.

b. I *think* you want to work to feel like you are contributing to society. The volunteer position would allow that.

c. I *think* you want to work to have your own money to do things with. The volunteer position will not do that.... but perhaps now is a good time to talk with your parents about allowing you to have some or all control of your benefits?

Just some ideas to think about. They may not be in line with what you are thinking, so if so, I apologize.

Hope you are having a good day, sir!

P.S. Did you get a new pipe yet?

I think it is a good idea Pipe has, to try a volunteer position at the hospital 1st to see if you would be able to hold down a job ...I know its a dream of yours to be self sufficent and working but take it slow....This is a big step you are talking about...

My only concern is this - I have friends who are moms that have lost their jobs because they took too much time off when their children were sick. Others sent their kids to school sick because they were afraid to take a day off for the same reason. Will an employer be able to understand you taking off several days becaue you can't leave the house due to your illness?
