A Manic Mother…
Mom called me after midnight last night. I had been in the bed since ten zonked out. I sighed as the phone rang trying to decide if to answer it or not. I finally got up out of my warm bed in the freezing cold of my house and answered the phone after mom left a lengthy message on my answering machine…
“Mom do you know what time it is?” I asked before she could speak.
“Let me look at my clock,” she replied, walking across the room. “Oh, I didn’t realize it was so late.”
Mom was manic.
“What are you doing?”
“Well, your dad is on the Internet and not talking to me. He says I am acting crazy. He told me to take my Xanax and go to bed.”
“Do you think your Xanax will help you?” I asked.
“Oh, I don’t want to go to bed yet,” she said, sounding like a small petulant child.
We stayed on the phone for another hour as mom told me all about her frets and worries. I just sat there on the bed smoking cigarettes and listening as Maggie preened. Mom was a jumbled mess of thoughts jumping from one topic to another. It was almost like a harried frenzy.
“Well, I will let you go back to bed,” mom finally said. “I enjoyed our talk. Your father’s not talking to me.”
Mom assured me she was taking her medications and going to bed.
“I hate they take an hour to take effect!” she said and then hung up the phone without any pleasantries.
I couldn’t go back to sleep then. I lay in the bed for an hour listening to the radio and finally got up. Soon, it was thundering and lightning outside and my spirits improved. I have a busy day ahead of me so hopefully I can catch up on sleep this afternoon after all my tasks are done.
